Goal of the Programme
To prepare physical education personnel at advanced levels with relevant knowledge and skills in enquiry, research and dissemination relevant to physical education.
Programme Objectives
Upon completion of the programme the graduate will be able to:
a) Train competent personnel to teach physical Education in schools, teacher training colleges and other institutions of higher learning.
b) Produce personnel capable of planning and managing sports events in all institutions of learning.
c) Equip personnel with necessary skills and knowledge for the enhancement of Physical health through physical activity for all populations in the community.
d) Provide skills in enquiry, research and dissemination in Physical Education.
e) Demonstrate application of scientific principles in improving sports
Rationale
Advances in scientific and technical orientation of Physical Education and accompanying dialogue needs wider in-depth specialization among the increasing number of Physical Education graduates from round the country. Additionally, the increase in hypokinetic conditions in Africa and the whole world demands vital academic discourse and research. This requires expanded knowledge in Physical Education at various levels of learning as a preventive measure to lifestyle diseases and need to promote learning through sports. Therefore, this programme is geared towards providing training of physical Education professionals at advanced instructional levels commensurate with these demands.
Admission Requirements for the Programme
Entry requirements
The common regulations for all Master’s Degrees in the university shall apply:
a) Relevant academic bachelor’s degree holders
b) Upper second class honors or a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00;
c) Lower second class honors or a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 on a scale of 4.00 with additional relevant training, evidence of research capability either through research, paper presentations or peer reviewed publications and relevant working experience.
d) Holders of relevant Post Graduate Diploma in Physical Education of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University shall be eligible for admission to the programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The common regulations for all Master’s Degrees in the University shall apply.

A holder of a First Class or an Upper Second first degree or its equivalent in a relevant discipline shall be considered. Graduates of Physical Education, Exercise and Sports Science or Recreation and Sports Management as well as those in related fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition and Special Education shall be considered.

Holders of a relevant Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Administration and Management of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University shall be eligible for admissions to the programme while holders of a Post Graduate Diploma in related disciplines may also be considered.
DURATION AND PATTERN OF STUDY

The Master’s degree shall extend over a minimum period of 18 months.

The degree shall be offered by Coursework, Examination and Thesis.

The coursework shall include lectures, field experiences, practicals, seminar reports and case studies as required in the synopses of particular units.

During the first year of study, students will take ten (10) units.

In the second year of study, students will undertake research work, prepare and present theses for examination.
