Department of pharmacology and clinical pharmacy

The department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy was created when the former Department of Pharmacy and Complementary/Alternative/Medicine was upgraded to a School of Pharmacy. The department is organized into two sections, namely;

Pharmacology
Pharmacy Practice and Policy

Currently, the department main preoccupation is training and mentoring of Bachelor of Pharmacy undergraduates’ students in key specialty in Pharmacy profession, namely; Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacy Management and Pharmaco-economics.

The departmental mission and vision, that is, “To be a center of excellence in training and research in the disciplines of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Practice” and “ To generate and disseminate Pharmacological and Pharmacy Practice knowledge that is intellectually rigorous through best-practice teaching and innovative research in partnership with local and international professionals and industry”, not only help in realization of the School and University mission, but they are also in line with the Country Vision 2030 and the “BIG 4” agenda.

In particular, through application of pharmacological knowledge, the department trains, mentors and eventually produce a competent Bachelor of Pharmacy graduate who is an innovative researcher able to innovate discovers new medicines or advance the understanding of biological phenomena, such as mechanism of new diseases, therapies (both old and new) or underlying toxicology. This not only help in advancement of affordable healthcare as envisioned in the “BIG 4” agenda but serve as an impetus to country’s industrialization.

Furthermore, through evolutionary Pharmacy Practice such as a in Clinical Pharmacy, a health professional able to take part in patient centred care via optimization of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical use as well as promoting health, wellness, and prevent diseases.

THE DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES INCLUDE;

Provide patient care in a variety of settings in ways that support research and learning
To prepare Bpharm and PharmD student for practice
To provide advanced training to practitioners through postgraduate residences and clinical scientists through postgraduate fellowships
To develop new drugs and pharmaceutical care tools and products
To strength the capacity of staff in teaching and research

Motivated by my love for chemistry in high school, I decided to choose pharmacy as a course in university. The once familiar world of chemistry now unfolded in numerous dimensions, demanding a deep understanding of not only chemical reactions but also intricate processes governing drug development and patient care.

University experience presented me with a myriad of challenges demanding an increased level of dedication and perseverance. The journey did not only test my academic prowess but also my resilience and passion for the field. This however marked the beginning of an intellectually stimulating adventure.

I got the chance to experience research as one of the students chosen for the HEPI program. This was an insightful experience as I got hands-on experience not only on research but also on clinical skills during the ward rounds not forgetting the dispensing skills at the pharmacy.

This experience further grew my interest in research with specific research interests in pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, radiopharmacy as well as research in oncology.

Finally I'd like to extend my gratitude to my lecturers who have been very supportive throughout my journey and special mentions to Dr Makanga, my advisor, Dr Magutu, a great inspiration and Dr Kahiga for the HEPI experience as well as KEMRI experience.

My trip to Limerick, Ireland was one of the most fulfilling journeys I’ve been on. The beautiful, serene environment and the wonderful Irish people will forever be engraved in my memory.

I got selected as one of three winners worldwide to attend a medical exchange elective at the University of Limerick facilitated by the Student Network Organization (SNO) and the Global Educational Exchange in Medicine and the Health Professions (GEMx) from 30^th July to 14^th August at the University Hospital Limerick. My experience there was remarkable and I acquired extensive and practical knowledge. I was on a renal rotation with a medical team that was very supportive.

I had ward rounds every morning, and interacted with some patients thus actively taking part in their recovery process. I visited the hospital’s main pharmacy and learnt about their prescribing patterns, drug therapy monitoring, and the preparation of antineoplastic formulations for cancer patients. I got a chance to visit the dialysis units (peritoneal and hemodialysis) and attended a few multidisciplinary clinical cases discussions.

Bachelor of Pharmacy

Currently, the Department participates in training the Bachelor of Pharmacy students by teaching courses in Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice
The Bachelor of Pharmacy degree course (B. Pharm) is a fulltime programme that extends over a period of not less than five academic years of three semesters each.

In addition to meeting the university entry requirements, candidates for admission into the BPharm degree course shall be required to have obtained
