Kenyatta University (KU) and University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), in Canada, are partnering in a third phase of a collaborative project entitled “Integrating Multidisciplinary, Community-Based, Innovative Research & Training Methods for Improved Sustainable Livelihoods in a Farming Region of Kenya”.
Through the project, one student enrolled at Kenyatta University will receive a full scholarship to undertake a thesis-based graduate degree (M.Sc.) at Kenyatta University with a 2 month placement in Canada affiliated with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Canada. The program of study will start September 2025 and be completed by September 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the coursework at KU and conduct research in the Kiirua area of Meru County in Kenya. The postgraduate degree will be awarded from KU.
The overall project focuses on improving livelihoods and food security among rural farm families. This scholarship will focus on evaluating the benefits of a pilot training for lifestyle disease prevention and management being offered to Community Health Promoters in Meru County and in partnership with Farmers Helping Farmers, a Canadian non-governmental organization and the Gender Responsive One Health Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada


Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be Kenyan citizens.
  2. Applicants must have obtained their first degree from Kenyatta University with either 1st Class Honors or Second Class (Upper Division), in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics.
  3. Candidates must be computer literate. Those with a certificate will have an added advantage.
  4. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili, and ability to work well as part of a group and independently. An example of a written report (2-10 pages) that was written by the applicant (without assistance) should be submitted with the application.

Candidates are not above 35 years as of September 1, 2025 and must be eligible for a Kenyan Passport.
K.U. employees are also encouraged to apply.


Funding:
Funding will cover the KU university tuition fees and modest living expenses designed to cover time while in courses at KU and while living at the research site; for a total of 24 months. As well, transportation to and from Canada is covered, including ground transport in Kenya to arrive at the airport and return home. Accommodation and support while in Canada will be provided by UPEI and FHF.
