Rationale:

In recognition of the importance of Physical Education in improving the Nations’ health, Physical Education has been made a mandatory requirement in all institutions of learning up to secondary/senior school. Physical Education has also been made compulsory for those undergoing courses in teacher training colleges to meet the rising demand for knowledgeable personnel to implement the subject at primary and secondary schools. Moreover, the adoption of the Competence Based Curriculum has enhanced content and delivery of Physical Education at all school levels by making mandatory and examinable. Concurrently, it has introduced the Sports Science track as a discipline at senior school level for learners wishing to pursue careers in physical activity and sports related professions. In addition, the review of this programme was also informed by the Physical Education and Sports Policy for Basic Education 2021 which was developed with an overarching goal of promoting the provision of P.E and sport in basic education institutions. This was in line with educational reforms to align the provision of education with the tenets of the Constitution of Kenya, and to position education provision as a key stimulus and enabler for Kenya’s socio-economic transformation agenda as stipulated in vision 2030. These created the need for enhancing teacher education in this specialized area to meet the expanding demand for competent physical educators who will ensure successful implementation of the curriculum in Kenyan public and private schools and tertiary institutions. The teacher must inculcate appreciation, recognition and relevance of physical education, not only to personal but also to national health and quality of life for all Kenyans. In addition, the teachers need to apply their knowledge of Physical Education and Sports to engage and impact the community in health promotion, sports talent development and character development for better society. This revised programme aims at addressing emerging issues and needs in Physical Education and Sports by empowering the teacher with appropriate competencies to find appropriate solutions in overcoming challenges and needs of a changing society.
