2. Introduction 

Kenyatta University became the second university in Kenya to mount the Doctor of Philosophy (Pharmacognosy). Upon completion, graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Pharmacognosy)  

Doctor of Philosophy (Pharmacognosy)   by thesis is a research-intensive postgraduate program designed for individuals seeking to advance their expertise in the study of natural products and their applications in medicine, health, and industry.

Through rigorous investigation and experimentation, students explore the therapeutic potential of natural products, develop novel drug formulations, and address challenges related to quality control, standardization, and sustainability of natural medicinal resources.

3. Program Objectives

To train a professional who will:

·         Advance knowledge in pharmacognosy through original research and innovation on natural products and their therapeutic applications.

·         Enhance quality control and standardization of herbal medicines and natural products.

·         Prepare graduates for leadership roles in academia, industry, and regulatory bodies.

·         Address global health challenges by developing and promoting sustainable utilization of affordable and accessible medicines from natural sources

·         Address health challenges by integrating complementary and alternative medicine with conventional practices and promote indigenous African medicinal knowledge for global healthcare advancement.

 

4. Justification/Rationale

The Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy is essential for advancing the discovery and development of natural products with therapeutic potential, addressing global health challenges, and promoting sustainable use of biodiversity. It integrates indigenous African medicinal knowledge with modern science, preserving cultural heritage while enhancing healthcare solutions. The program fosters innovation in drug discovery, quality control, and standardization of herbal medicines, ensuring safety and efficacy. By bridging complementary and alternative medicine with conventional practices, it expands treatment options. Additionally, it equips graduates to lead research, academia, and industry, contributing to economic growth and improved public health outcomes, particularly in underserved communities. This makes the program critical for scientific progress and societal impact. 

5. Admission Requirements:

1.       The common University regulations for PhD degree shall apply.

2.       The general regulations for PhD degree in the School of Health Sciences shall apply.

3.       In addition, Applicants will be required to have a Master’s Degree in Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Botany or other related pharmacy and science areas from Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution.

8. Curriculum Highlights

The program is designed in a Research-centric approach with no coursework; entirely thesis-based where the candidates are required to develop an independent research project addressing significant scientific gaps with regard to natural products in healthcare. Focus areas include: naturopathy, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, bioassays, drug discovery, drug formulation and production, and quality control. Advanced techniques in areas such as Chromatography, spectroscopy, omics technologies, in-vitro assays, animal models, molecular docking, nanotechnologies etc. will be applied.

The program is offered with an interdisciplinary collaboration focus across basic and clinical sciences. It is also modelled on sustainability and integration of indigenous medicinal knowledge with global health relevance to provide affordable and accessible healthcare solutions.
